A new Northern Ireland sign language version of the Driving Theory Test practice questions has been developed by the Southern Health and Social Care Trust.

Staff from the South Eastern HSC Trust attended a celebration event recently organised by Dementia Together NI Partnership aimed at sharing learning about dementia initiatives developed to raise awareness and address the stigma surrounding dementia.

Eiad Qudairat, Clinical Director/Consultant Oral & Maxillo-Facial Surgery is used to getting thanked by his very grateful patients due to the nature of his work and the difference it makes in their lives, but recently he received a very unique and personal thank you gift that took him quite by surprise.

Damien McCorry and Tracey Boyd from Core M&E Services recently donated toys to our Children’s wards at the Ulster Hospital. Staff and friends of Core M&E services purchased gifts for children who will spending the Christmas period in hospital and encouraged others to do so as well,  by setting up a donation point in their Newtownards offices.

The Department of Health has announced an extension of the consultation period on the draft Strategic Framework for Imaging Services to Friday 22 January 2018.

Congratulations to the South Eastern Health & Social Care Trust’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Team who have been awarded BACPR/NACR certification status for a period of three years.

Christmas Jumper Day 2017

The inspirational stories of Gertie Kelly, Helen Orr and Abbie McCartney saving lives after they died through organ donation have been installed within the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust to help families who may find themselves facing the death of a loved one to consider whether organ donation is the right thing for them.

Pat Hamill from Broughshane has donated £13,010 to Macmillan Cancer Support in recognition of the treatment he received for mouth cancer at the Ulster Hospital, Dundonald.

Over recent months, Adult Mental Health Services, together with Trust Emergency Departments have promoted and established interagency working relationships with colleagues within the PSNI and the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS).

Congratulations to our Prison Healthcare Team and the Northern Ireland Prison Service who have won the Belfast Healthy Cities ‘Engaging for Change’ Award.

Congratulations to our Prison Healthcare Team who won the 'Integrated Team of the Year Award' at the Health Heroes National Awards recently held in London. Well done everyone!

The Midwifery Led Unit (MLU) open evening held recently at Lagan Valley Hospital was a great success. Over 100 people attended and provided positive feedback through questionnaires, describing the service as “Professional and caring.”


The Trust Transport Division has been awarded, for the second year running, accreditation under an initiative developed by the Freight Transport Association (FTA) known as ‘Van Excellence’.

25 November is the UN International Day of Elimination of Violence Against Women and marks the start of The 16 Days of Action which runs until the 10th December (Human Rights Day)

Congratulations to the South Eastern HSC Trust Laundry Service who recently won a Laundry and Cleaning News (LCN) Award for the second year running.

The Ulster Hospital Annual Lecture & Awards recently took place in the Quality Improvement and Innovation Centre. The three guest speakers, Dr Anne Marie McClean and Dr Danielle Leemon gave presentations on their experiences as ADEPT Clinical Leadership Fellows and Mr Scott McCain gave a presentation on Informed Consent.

To mark the month of November being Pancreatic Cancer Awareness month, the pancreatic cancer team hosted an information stand in the Ulster Hospital on Thursday 9 November 2017. The team were on hand along with the Pancreatic Cancer UK Regional Officer to discuss information on pancreatic cancer and support services as well as giving everyone the chance to enter into a prize raffle and the opportunity to try the purple heart cookies baked by Julie MacMillan, G I Cancer Nurse Specialist. The prize raffle raised £115 on the day and all proceeds were donated to Pancreatic Cancer UK.

800 schools are currently taking part in the ‘Daily Mile’, a free initiative aimed at improving the physical, social, emotional, mental health and wellbeing of school children regardless of age, ability or personal circumstances. Recently local schools had an opportunity to enter a competition to win a set of Fit Bits to support the ‘Daily Mile’ programme in their school, all they had to do was give their feedback and say what they thought of the ‘Daily Mile’ by writing, sending artwork or photos.

To support Mouth Cancer Awareness month, the Head and Neck Cancer Team in the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust are encouraging people to be more aware of the early signs and symptoms of mouth cancer and the main risk factors.

The South Eastern HSC Trust launched its first Midwifery Careers Day programme on the 14th November 2017 with the aim of fulfilling its commitment to ensuring that young people within our geographical area are offered a work experience opportunity that may support them to progress towards career goals & pathways, both academic and vocational.

The Declan McMullan Fund recently hosted a very successful fundraising concert in Denvir’s Hotel, Downpatrick. The event was headlined by local band The Untouchables and was very well supported.

Today is World Quality Day and as part of the celebrations we have launched our fifth Annual Quality Report.

Congratulations to all members of staff who were awarded at the Celebration of Achievement event held in Bangor Elim Church yesterday morning.

Self Check-in has now arrived at the Emergency Department (ED) in the Ulster Hospital. The kiosks are located in the ED reception area and aim to improve the patient experience by reducing queues and providing faster check-in. The Self Check-in kiosks should only be used for those patients presenting with a minor illness/injuries only.

This is the eighth year of the South Eastern Health & Social Care Trust Chairman's Recognition Awards which recognise, reward and celebrate the exceptional achievements of staff, whether as an individual or a team.

‘Social Isolation & Loneliness - Volunteer Befrienders really make a Difference’

The Obstetrics and Gynaecology Training Unit in the Ulster Hospital has been rated as one of the Top 10 in the UK and ‘outstanding’ by The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

A two day Stop Smoking Specialist Training Course will take place on Thursday 30th November and Friday 1st December 2017 in Cancer Focus N.I. premises at 40/44 Eglantine Avenue. Belfast and will run from 9.30am-4.30pm both days.

World Mental Health Day 2017 was celebrated in the South Eastern HSC Trust with a BBQ in Finneston House where Mr Don Bradley, Assistant Director for Mental Health officially opened the newly refurbished Mental Health Acute Community Services. Mr Bradley welcomed everyone and emphasised that the refurbishment demonstrated the South Eastern HSC Trust’s dedication to developing services in Downpatrick.

Car parking charges will be introduced on the Ards Hospital site from Wednesday, 1 November 2017. The aim is to improve traffic flow on the site by reducing queuing and congestion, which is making patients late for hospital appointments.

At its extraordinary meeting today, the South Eastern HSC Trust Board has agreed to go ahead with the low or no impact proposals in the Trust's savings plan, which has been out to public consultation for the past six weeks.

The South Eastern HSC Trust welcomes the additional money for health and social care which, we believe, means we will be able to remove the major impact or controversial proposals in our savings plan.

The Trust recently celebrated the first anniversary of the Ulster Hospital Travel Plan which aims to promote transport alternatives available to staff on the Ulster Hospital site.

The next sessions of Stress Control commence on Mon 9 October 2017 in Bangor & 11 October 2017 in Newtownards.

A Service of Remembrance in memory of those children and babies who have passed away before or after birth will take place on 11 October at 7.30pm in the Recreation Hall, Ulster Hospital.

A burst water main at Lagan Valley Hospital in Lisburn has meant cancellation of all surgery and endoscopy procedures in the hospital today. We are in the process of contacting patients to let them know.

Most recent statistics from Smoking Cessation in acute care show that 33% of clients referred from SET Cardiology Teams who enrol with the service are still quit smoking at one year follow up.

The Smoking Cessation team are happy to announce that referral for inpatients are now available on the Trust E Whiteboard referral system (Cayder).

The Trust has been set a savings target of £10.85m, to be achieved in the second half of the current financial year. It’s part of an overall £70m savings plan across the HSC system, in order to meet the statutory requirement for financial break even in 2017/18.

Patient and client experience is recognised as a key element in the delivery of quality healthcare. In line with this, the Public Health Agency (PHA) is carrying out an extensive piece of work across all Health and Social Care Trusts.

‘Stress Control’ is a six session class provided free of charge by the South Eastern Health & Social Care Trust and delivered by experienced qualified cognitive-behavioural psychotherapists. Sessions previously held have proved to be extremely successful.

Pupils and staff at Dromara Primary School have been celebrating their first year of participating in The Daily Mile.

The Workshops provide nursing and midwifery staff and the people who use their services the opportunity to have their say about the care provided and how we can make things better in the future.

Alcohol Awareness Week takes place from 19 – 25 June and the theme this year is “Know Your Units.”

The Ulster University Impact Excellence Awards were held on 11th May 2017. At the awards ceremony, our laboratories were highly commended for their role in training and supporting Ulster University Placement students.

Elder abuse affects about 500,000 people across the UK each year and the aim of this Awareness Day is to educate people on how to prevent abuse and how to get help if they are being abused or suspect someone is. Financial abuse and exploitation is one of the most prevalent forms of elder abuse.

A new partnership scheme aimed at providing support to carers in the community has been launched across the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust area.

The Clock is ticking! It won’t be long now until International Men’s Health Week (MHW) starts. This year it will run from Monday 12 June until Sunday 18 June 2017. This year’s theme is ‘It’s all about HIM’ and the key question is: ‘How are you doing?’ If the answer is ‘not very well’, then it’s time to join with other people to do something positive and practical about it!

The Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia is coming to Northern Ireland on Sunday 4 June 2017, 3rd Edition and will be starting and finishing at the Stormont Estate. People living with the bone disease osteoporosis in the Lisburn area will have the opportunity to hear from bone health experts at a free osteoporosis information event on Thursday, June 1st 2017.

When Ann retired she wanted to do something to help someone else and Ann felt that Befriending is giving time to someone who is very lonely.

Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service

The next phase of wards in the Ulster Hospital will be moving this weekend from the main block into the new Inpatient Ward Block situated at the rear of the site.

Free pain management courses open to anyone living with a chronic pain

The Infection Prevention and Control Team organised activities for World Hand Hygiene Day held on 5 May.

The Ulster Maternity User Group at Ulster Hospital has relaunched themselves as BUMPS - Babies, Users, Midwives, Parents and Services.

The First Steps summer scheme provides daily supervision for children aged between 5 - 12 years old. The summer scheme is primarily for South Eastern Trust employees; however registration forms are accepted from the general public.

South Eastern Trust's second cohort of Dementia Champions celebrated their graduation at a ceremony held in their honour.

A new sculpture called Resonance Grows, which allows people to speak to each other through clever technology at its heart, is unveiled at the new Inpatient Ward Block at the Ulster Hospital.

Fiona Talbot and Janey Milligan, consultant hand therapists at South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust, have won a major UK award for their achievement in creating a plastic surgery therapist-led clinic.  

An occupational therapy team from NI are the overall winners of the UK-wide Advancing Healthcare awards programme.

The Lisburn Volunteer Laundry Service has been operating since 1979, it provides a valuable service and support to family’s caring for a loved one at home and clients who can feel isolated from the local community.

Well done to Jill Holland, Staff Nurse, Maynard Sinclair Ward, Ulster Hospital who recently completed the Dublin Marathon raising £300 which she generously donated to the Peads in a Pod group.

Tuesday 21 March 2017 was World Social Work Day and in the South Eastern Trust there were a number of celebratory events being held to celebrate this.

The Southern Trust worked with local deaf people and a local interpreter to help develop a sign language version of the Driving Test Theory practice questions.

Wednesday 15 March 2017 was World Delirium Awareness Day. Ward 22 held an information stand at Ulster Hospital to raise awareness of Delirium

The South Eastern Trust have been working in partnership with The Fostering Network to help create a short film for BBC Community Life focusing on Foster Care and we are delighted to inform you that it will be launched this weekend on BBC Northern Ireland.

Smoke Free Feedback


On 9th March 2016, the Trust introduced a new smoke-free policy. One year on, we want to seek your views about Smoke Free sites across the South Eastern Trust.  


The Trust has launched a new 5 week course for patients who have been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.

Local schools in the Dundonald Extended Schools Cluster have taken a very special trip to the Ulster Hospital to switch on the lights of a sculpture at the multi million pound new facility.

Head to Nature


An innovative wellbeing project has recently taken place at RSPB Portmore Lough near Aghalee. The Head to Nature project was a 12 week pilot project organised by RSPB Northern Ireland in partnership with the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust, Derriaghy Social and Educational Centre and the Public Health Agency.

Ovarian Cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women and is strongly related to age with almost 85% occurring in women over the age of 50. Many women are diagnosed too late, once the cancer has already spread, making treatment more difficult.

Kathleen McMaster and Tirintha Fisher from Kircubbin recently donated £1000 to the Palliative Care Team to purchase a syringe driver in memory of Mary Andrews (Sister to Kathleen McMaster and Aunt to Tirintha Fisher.)


A free 6 week stress management programme in Newtownards and Bangor.

Michelle and Donal Logue from Downpatrick recently presented the Ulster Hospital Maternity Unit with a Cuddle Cot in memory of their son Cian Donal who passed away in January 2016.

The Ulster Hospital is now offering Hypnobirthing classes as a birth preparation option for women and their birth partners from 28 weeks gestation.

The Urodynamic Service is a new service for the Ulster Hospital, enabled by a generous donation to purchase equipment by Mr T Eakin.

The staff of the Neonatal Unit at the Ulster Hospital ensured that the baby’s in their care over the Christmas period were able to enjoy the magic of Christmas.
