Choose Well - If You Need To Use Health & Care Services Over Christmas & New Year

The Health and Social Care Board together with the Trust, local GPs, pharmacists and dentists have been working to ensure that local people have access to urgent care services over the Christmas and the New Year holiday period. The following health and care arrangements will be in place should you or a member of your family become ill or have an accident.

Changes to Emergency Care Services - Lagan Valley & Downe Hospitals (from 4/1/14)

The Emergency Departments at the Downe Hospital, Downpatrick and Lagan Valley Hospital in Lisburn will have reduced opening hours from  4 January, 2014, due to a shortage of suitably qualified emergency medicine doctors.

Santa & Graham BAM Healthcare Visit Children's Unit at Ulster Hospital

Santa took some time out of his busy schedule to pay a visit to young patients at the Children’s Unit at the Ulster Hospital recently. The visit was arranged by GRAHAM Bam Healthcare Partnership (GBHP) and supported by their supply chain.

Project Provides Creative Learning

The Well 2 Project works with 16-25 year olds with additional support needs providing social activities and personal development courses to encourage young people to engage in their community. Along with the support of Ards Art Centre, the project provided a digital photography course facilitated by photographer Davy Holden.

Local Primary School Donates Gifts to Children's Unit

Play Specialists from Maynard Sinclair Ward in the Ulster Hospital were delighted to receive donations of toys from Grange Park Primary School in Bangor.

Midwives Donate Funds to Charity

Julie Gough, Hazel McCalister and Lorraine McMordie who are midwives from the Ulster Hospital Maternity Unit presented the Very Reverend Dean of Belfast John Mann with a donation from the Annual Maternity Carol Service.

70 delegates and finalists assembled at Devonshire Place in Leicester recently for the Finals Day of Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership and the Clinical Audit Support Centre Junior Doctor Clinical Audit and Quality Improvement Awards.

New Dementia Suite Opens in Bayview

A new Dementia Suite for service users has been officially opened in Bayview Centre in Bangor by Lady Sylvia Hermon. ‘The Butterfly Suite’ is a purpose built self-contained unit within Bayview which is designed to meet the needs of 10 service users with Dementia and is open on Tuesday’s and Thursdays.

The Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory Team at the Ulster Hospital are delighted to announce that they recently carried out their 1000th coronary angiogram since they opened on 7 January 2013.

Entitled Listening, Sharing, and Learning this conference was jointly organised by the Belfast Health Trust and the South Eastern Health Trust Domestic Violence Partnerships, and funded by the DHSSPS and the PSNI highlighted the importance of effective interventions to protect victims and the critical need to support families in the aftermath of a fatal domestic incident.

A shocking £2.4 million worth of medical time and resources have been potentially lost in the South Eastern HSC Trust in the past year, because people did not attend their appointments. Meanwhile, studies have shown that missed outpatient appointments increase inappropriate and unnecessary attendances at Emergency Departments

A programme aimed at raising awareness of the importance of nursery rhymes in early childhood has been launched by Speech and Language Therapists in the South Eastern Trust.  The programme was developed with funding from the Public Health Agency.

Sylvia Foster has received an MBE in the recent Honours List for her contribution to Nursing. Sylvia is a District Nursing Sister in Lisburn Health Centre and was nominated for the award by a number of patients who she had cared for and from their families. Sylvia is delighted to have received such a prestigious award.

The Trust Board has supported the recommendation that the single acute mental health inpatient unit should be located on the former Tor Bank site, adjacent to the Ulster Hospital.  The business case to support the project has now been submitted to the Health & Social Care Board and the DHSSPSNI for support and approval. No indication on timescale can be given until this process is complete.  This new “centre of excellence” will be created from the three existing units at the Ulster, Lagan Valley and Downe Hospitals.

Equipment Stolen from Emergency Department at Ulster Hospital

During the weekend, an essential piece of equipment used in the treatment of children was stolen from the Emergency Department at the Ulster Hospital.

Opening of Cedar Court Downpatrick

A new £3m supported living development for older people has been officially opened in Downpatrick. Cedar Court is a blueprint for the future, the type of leading edge accommodation which is to replace residential homes, under Transforming Your Care. Each tenant has their own apartment with their own front door and furniture, but help and support is available 24 hours a day, to allow them to live as independently as possible.

Local Health Trust Named As One Of The CHKS Top 40 Trusts In UK

The Trust has been named as one of the top 40 acute hospital Trusts in the United Kingdom. The award is given to the 40 top performing CHKS Trusts in the UK and is one of several awards that are part of the CHKS Top Hospitals Programme.

New Youth Health Advice Clinic for Young People in Lisburn

The Trust in partnership with South Eastern Regional College (SERC) is delighted to launch SERC Health, a new ‘Youth Health Advice Clinic’ which offers free, tailored, impartial advice on a range of health and wellbeing topics to anyone under the age of 25.

When you consider that more than 150,000 people in Northern Ireland are suffering from depression at any given time, it is essential that we do all we can to help support our mental health.

15% of women in Northern Ireland smoke throughout pregnancy.  The shock figure reflects the general increase in the number of young women who smoke, and is causing concern about the health of new born babies. Smoke Free Wombs is an exciting initiative by midwives in the South Eastern HSC Trust to encourage mums -to-be to stop smoking.

Be Bowel Cancer Aware

April is Bowel Cancer Awareness month. Bowel Cancer is the second most common cancer in Northern Ireland. Over 1,100 people are diagnosed every year and over 400 people die from the disease. However, if diagnosed early it can be treated very successfully in 90% of cases. 

World Class Environmental Award for Health Trust

The Trust has been awarded the world’s most recognised Environmental Management Standard (EMS), ISO 14001. This is a magnificent achievement placing it as one of the leaders in sustainable management within the health sector in the UK and Ireland.

Regional Estates Training Group Pick Up Award

The Northern Ireland Regional Estates Training Group have been awarded the John Bolton Memorial Award for Excellence in the Field of Education, Training and Development. Timothy Sheehan, Assistant Director of Estates, South Eastern HSC Trust and who is a member of the group picked up the award at a recent ceremony.
