Special Day Brings Joy to Patients

25/05/2016

The MacDermott Unit is an outpatient unit providing systemic anti-cancer treatment for patients from the age of 18 years. The unit works in partnership with The Willow Foundation, a registered charity that provides a “Special Day” for patients from the ages of 16-40 years. They provide a “Special Day” to give them something to look forward to. This can help when treatment is tough and gives them something to aim towards and strive for.

One such patient was Emma Bell. Emma attended for treatment until December 2015 and for her special day, she asked to attend a Peter Andre concert. The Willow Foundation not only made this possible but also offered the rare opportunity for her to meet him. She went with her mum to London, met Peter and then had a wonderful time at his concert. The Willow Foundation organised everything; flights, transfers, hotel and the evening itself. They had a wonderful weekend in London too. Emma has this to say of her experience:

“My Special Day with Peter Andre allowed me to escape reality into a dream that I never felt was possible. All my worries disappeared and for once, I felt there was a light at the end of a very dark tunnel. The whole experience was stress free and exceeded any expectation I ever had. It marked the ending of my treatment and a new beginning.”

Information from The Willow Foundation:

Willow is the only national charity working with seriously ill 16 to 40 year olds to fulfil uplifting and unforgettable Special Days.

For some their Special Day is the opportunity to return some normality to their lives. For others it is the last chance to fulfil a dream. But for all, it is a life-affirming experience that can lift spirits, reunify families and be a source of strength when it’s needed most.

To date, Willow has provided more than 12,000 Special Days for young adults diagnosed with a life-threatening condition such as cancer, motor neurone disease, cystic fibrosis and Huntington’s disease.
