Trust Welcomes Hand Hygiene Torch

A special torch aimed at promoting hand hygiene is on tour around parts of Europe, the UK and Ireland (from 5th May – 26 th September 2016) and it recently arrived in the Trust.

The Torch Tour has been arranged to coincide with the World Health Organisation ‘Clean Your Hands – Call to Action campaign’ and has been organised by the Infection Prevention Society. The Torch Tour will finish on 26 September 2016 at the first day of Infection Prevention 2016 Conference in Harrogate.
The aims of the Hand Hygiene Torch Tour are to:

• Raise awareness of the importance of hand hygiene among the general public;
• Promote the Infection Prevention Society nationally and internationally;
• Partner with other healthcare infection and patient organisations to highlight the annual World Health Organisation ‘Clean Your Hands - Call to Action’ for healthcare workers.

The Infection Control Team organised events across the Trust, including educational sessions in the First Steps Nursery groups in Lagan Valley and the Ulster Hospital. Staff, patients and visitors participated showing their support in raising awareness of the importance of hand hygiene. The Torch even managed to make its way to Stormont and the Health Minister’s Office.

Isobel King, Infection Prevention & Control lead stated, "We were delighted to have the opportunity to “spread the message not the bugs,” across many age groups in the community”. "The best way to prevent the spread of infection, including cold and flu viruses is by washing your hands frequently throughout the day with soap and water."
