Emergency Dept Staff Support Patients with Dementia Through New Initiative

06/12/2016

A ‘Rummage Trolley’ for patients with dementia has recently been introduced within the Emergency Department in the Ulster Hospital.

This wonderful initiative provides dementia patients with items such as colouring books, puzzles, jigsaws, DVD’s, magazines, games and books with pictures of local areas from the past that patients may identify with and remember the scenes.

Jenny Nicholson, Emergency Department Sister who was instrumental in developing this initiative says “Staff have already seen the benefit of using the trolley items with our patients. It has relieved agitation and helps the patient to relax, making it safer and a better experience for the patient and their family during their time in the Emergency Department. Our volunteers and staff identify the items within the trolley that would be of interest to the specific patient they are with” .

Most of the items have been donated by staff from within the South Eastern HSC Trust following a recent appeal and their generosity is greatly appreciated.
