Introduction of Car Parking Charges - Ards Hospital

Car parking charges will be introduced on the Ards Hospital site from Thursday 1 March 2018. The aim of introducing these charges is to help improve traffic flow on the site by reducing queuing and congestion, which is making patients late for hospital appointments.

There will be two methods of charging at Ards Hospital – Pay & Display and Pay on Foot.  The Pay & Display area is situated adjacent to Church St and extends from the Minor Injuries Unit/GP Out of Hours along to the Gatelodge Café. This system of payment requires users to take a ticket from the Pay & Display machine, pay for the intended period of stay, and attach it to their front windscreen. The costs are set detailed below.

Pay on Foot parking applies to Lough House, Scrabo Children’s Centre and Old Mill Surgery these areas will be barrier controlled, with a ticket dispensed on entering and payment made at a pay station before returning to the car. The costs for Pay on Foot parking are set out below.

The South Eastern Health & Social Care Trust has successfully used parking enforcement measures on other sites to deal with inappropriate parking, to protect access for emergency vehicles and to ensure pedestrian routes are not obstructed. The measures will apply in a number of areas on the Ards Hospital site clearly identified by signage, and will ensure that:

  • Disabled Blue Badge Bays are protected for Blue Badge Holders
  • Emergency access routes are accessible by emergency vehicles
  • Ambulance bays are restricted to ambulances only
  • Drop off, pick up areas are used only for that purpose
  • Verges and pedestrian footways are kept clear
  • Restricted areas are not parked on
  • Staff Permit holding areas are used only by staff displaying permits

There are plans developed to extend parking capacity on the Ards Hospital site and while funding dependent we would hope that a further approximately 100 spaces will be available in the future.
