Solar Siblings Launches in the Neonatal Unit

Solar Siblings, a new exciting mission programme for the brothers and sisters of children being treated in the Neonatal Unit, Ulster Hospital was launched yesterday to mark World Prematurity Day.

This innovative idea was introduced by our fabulous Occupational Therapist, Lorraine Shaw. Having a baby in a Neonatal Unit can be a stressful time for families, especially if they have brothers and sisters at home.

Lorraine developed an exciting programme, where brothers and sisters go on a solar expedition, following the rules of the planets, including washing hands, being quiet, not running and not touching things.
Families are given a half hour time slot on a Saturday or Sunday to avoid children being overwhelmed and to prevent the unit being overcrowded by too many visitors. Once they complete their mission and see their baby brother or sister, they are rewarded with stars and a goody bag.

It was a delight to see all the brothers and sisters visiting yesterday.

The pictures of the Solar Siblings were designed by Moneyreagh Primary School and are on display outside the Neonatal Unit.

We look forward to having more Solar Sibling visitors in the future!
