Disability Network is a Healthy Living Centre (HLC) funded by the Big Lottery. We are unique in that we are the only HLC in the United Kingdom that works solely to improve the health and well being of disabled people. We work with disabled people aged 19-65 years who live in Lisburn City Council Area. We try and support them to improve their health and well being in the following ways: • We provide practical support for disabled people to get involved in community based sport and leisure activities (e.g. walking groups, dance, swimming, aerobics, gym sessions). We currently support around140 people each week to get active in the community. Most of the support we provide is in a group setting but we can provide one-to-one support on a short term basis in exceptional circumstances. • We develop the skills of local service providers to promote the health of disabled people by helping them to access training/resources in areas like smoking cessation, sexual health, drugs and alcohol awareness. • We work with community groups to encourage them to include disabled people in what they do. • We deliver a disability equality programme to local schools, employers, community groups etc. • We provide a signposting service for disabled people and their carers who want health information or have any general queries regarding local services.
