The Occupational Therapy Department provides a service to both the Downe and Lagan Valley Hospitals. Occupational Therapists provide assessment, treatment and advice on everyday functional activities (i.e. washing, dressing, bathing and toileting) with which patients may be experiencing difficulties following an illness. Occupational Therapists play a key role in the facilitation of safe discharge from hospital to home and may also carry out a home visit to assess and provide advice or equipment to ensure a safe and independent return home. Named Occupational Therapists, who are state registered, are identified in each of the acute and rehabilitation wards, with patients being referred by the medical, nursing or social work staff. Occupational Therapists are also based in the Elderly Day Care Unit at Lagan Valley Hospital. Occupational Therapy staff are available Monday – Friday (excluding bank holidays) from the hours of 8.00am to 4.00pm at Lagan Valley and 8.00am –4.45pm at the Downe Hospital.
