Alcohol and You

Alcohol and You is The South Eastern Trust and ASCERT, (supported by the PHA),  working together to reduce alcohol related harm.

We are delighted to have negotiated funding for the Brief Intervention(BI)Treatment Service and the Website and Social Media Platforms to continue following Big Lottery funding coming to an end.

The Alcohol and You BI Treatment Service is aimed at adults who are drinking at a significant risk level but not necessarily dependant or for those who are ambivalent about their alcohol intake. Low level prescription and/or illegal drug misuse will also be considered.

Up to 4 sessions are offered:

to assess use,
build motivation to change,
engage in Brief Intervention,
Refer on to other services if required.

Our outcomes show that 95% of clients had reduced their alcohol consumption on exit from the clinics. AUDIT scores reduced from an average of 19.8 (Harmful Drinking) to 8 (lower levels of hazardous drinking). (Queens Research Report 2017)

The website continues to be active and we encourage you to continue to use the interactive screening tools and the Self-Help element of the website.

Unfortunately, due to Big Lottery funding ending, our Counselling Service with Addiction NI and our Family Intervention Service with ASCERT have ceased activity.

Alcohol & You have developed Brief Advice Toolkits (BAT) for use in specific settings throughout the Trust:

 Hospital and Emergency Department

               Mental Health

Community/General use

All our BAT’s embrace NICE guidelines for effective behaviour change by embedding specific techniques in the tool’s content.

The advice tool directs people to a menu of options for support, the easiest being the ‘Alcohol and You’ website which has a self-help section.

There is a strong evidence base for the role of self-help as an effective component of intervention that can reach a large number of people. If anyone wants further face to face intervention, there is easy access to one- to-one support via the clinics or counseling within Alcohol and You.

Using brief advice in in these settings creates a unique and invaluable opportunity to reduce alcohol related harm.
