22 April 08 - Parkinson's Team Afternoon Tea

22 April 2008

Parkinson’s Team Afternoon Tea

The 3rd ‘Afternoon Tea’ session with the Parkinson’s Team at the Ulster Hospital took place on 11th April 2008. This annual event was held in the Elderly Care Unit’s Outpatient Department during the nationwide Parkinson’s disease Awareness week.

Our clients and their families, carers and friends were all welcomed. We were very grateful that staff of the Northern Ireland Parkinson’s Disease Society attended this particular ‘Afternoon Tea’ session. Our aim was to inform and introduce our guests to the new staff of the Society and inform how the Society can provide help for sufferers and their carers. The gathering was informal and everyone had the opportunity to mingle, compare notes and make new acquaintances!

Our guests were also updated on the Database System, acquired in November 2007, which will be used to gather information. This will be audited to guide as well as improve our service delivery, ensuring we maintain a high standard of service.

The newly formed North Down Parkinson’s Support Group had it’s inauguration on 14th June 2007 and an ‘open meeting’ is planned for the 22nd May 2008 in the Londonderry Room of the Ards Town Hall. It is hoped that people with Parkinson’s disease living within the catchments of the Ulster Hospital, their carers and families, as well as interested parties, will attend the event.

Posters showed our guests how the Movement Disorder service began in 1999. They also explained how the increasing numbers of new referrals over the years prompted the setting up of 2 clinics per week to meet the ever-growing numbers of new and follow-up cases.

Currently the Ulster Hospital offers clinic sessions on Thursday and Friday afternoons, lead by Dr. G. McConnell (Lead Clinician) and Dr. C. Ong (Staff Physician). The Outpatient nursing team is lead by Sister D. McKee, supported by her team members. See picture below:
