Young Carers

Young carers are children and young people who are looking after:

  • Parent
  • Brother or sister
  • Grandparent
  • Other relative

The person being cared for may have a physical or learning disability; sight or hearing difficulty; a mental health difficulty, or dependence on drugs/alcohol.

The difference between young carers and other young people who help in the home is that young carers are often responsible for someone else in their family in a way that most other young people aren’t.

As a result, young carers can sometimes miss out on opportunities that other young people have.
