Colorectal Service

The Colorectal Unit in the South Eastern Health & Social Care Trust provides a comprehensive range of services for the diagnosis and treatment of bowel cancer (also known as colorectal cancer, the general name for cancer of the colon, rectum or anus)

We provide these services across a number of hospital sites including:

  • Lagan Valley Hospital, Lisburn
  • Downe Hospital, Downpatrick
  • Ards Community Hospital, Newtownards
  • Bangor Community Hospital, Bangor
  • Ulster Hospital, Dundonald

The Colorectal Unit is closely linked to the Oncology Service based in the Cancer Centre at Belfast City Hospital.

Our aim is to provide the best possible standards of treatment, care and support for patients and carers affected by bowel cancer.

The colorectal team is committed to providing a dynamic and innovative service, which constantly, strives to provide high quality patient centred care.

Colorectal Nurse Specialists

The Colorectal Nurse Specialists are based at the Ulster Hospital Dundonald, although we provide a Trust-wide service.

We are nurses with a specific expertise in bowel cancer who can provide advice, information and support to patients and their carers on the diagnosis, treatment and management of their cancer.


Support

Support is provided through the provision of high quality information as well as valuable psychological and emotional support. This support is available throughout the patient’s journey at times such as:

  • When undergoing investigations for suspected bowel cancer
  • When surgery is necessary
  • When a stoma (an opening from the bowel on to tummy wall) may be required
  • During recovery from surgery
  • Following discharge
  • Beyond discharge and long term recovery

Our service offers telephone advice and one to one consultations as required.
