Your New Ulster Hospital

The key features of the developments are:
  • To provide modern, state of the art hospital facilities within a fully tailored and flexible design for the use of patients, staff and visitors
  • Create a focus for integrated delivery of high quality acute hospital services for East Belfast, North Down, Ards and Castlereagh area
  • Meets national standards for patient privacy and dignity
  • Construction programme complete by 2015/2016
The key benefits of the developments are:
  • Secure sustainable improvements in health for the residents of East Belfast, North Down, Ards and Castlereagh
  • Support the delivery of key health targets, improve outcomes and reduce waiting times for treatment
  • Provide ‘fit for purpose’ facilities which support the delivery of patient centred healthcare in a significantly enhanced environment
  • Optimal clinical and functional adjacencies ensure flexibility of use of both in the short and long term, thus ensuring that the facility is utilised to maximum efficiency
  • Improve access for disabled patients and staff through full DDA compliance
  • Improve prospects for recruitment and retention of staff and offer enhanced opportunities for continued professional development
  • Making the most efficient use of the existing site thus maximising scope for further expansion whilst also making available much of the minimally developed Health Estates land
Phase A – Overview

Phase A programme promises to develop a number of crucial key services to new modern standards. Construction began in 2005 and the first development, the new Renal Unit, opened to patients in November 2006.

Phase B - Overview

Work has been ongoing since December 2005 to develop a conceptual design for Phase B and new models of care for future services. The preferred option for Phase B incorporates the following elements:

  • A new emergency department and radiology department with a ward block above forming a single building sitting along side the critical care accommodation developed as part of Phase A
  • A new acute treatment centre incorporating day surgery, outpatients and a clinical investigations unit
  • A new Children’s Hospital incorporating inpatient and outpatient care
