Elderly Care Department

The Elderly Care Department was constructed in 1981 and over the last 25 years it has served our patients well. In urgent in need of major refurbishment to provide modern ward and clinical facilities, a building renovation project commenced on Monday, 24^th April 2006 for completion by Spring 2008. At this stage Phase 2 has now been completed.

Phase 1: April to July 2006

Essential preparatory works in Wards 21 and 22 to improve existing accommodation and facilitate the transfer of all patients from Ward 23.

Phase 2: August 2006 to June 2007

The complete renovation of wards 23 and 24. Both wards have been subdivided to provide four modern, fully refurbished wards thus enhancing the environment for patients and staff.

Phase 3: July 2007 to Spring 2008

Ward 21 is undergoing renovation and will convert to a 20-bed dementia ward with 12 single rooms, most with en-suite, two 4-bed wards, a large day/sitting area with attached conservatory, a work activity room and a day dining room. The new facility when complete will provide modern accommodation for dementia patients from the North Down and Ards area who currently use services at Downshire Hospital, Downpatrick.

Ward 22 will also be renovated and subdivided to provide another two modern fully refurbished wards for elderly care.
