What’s in the New Downe Hospital

The service profile for the New Downe Hospital remains as announced by the then Minister Mr Des Browne on 24th February 2004 and is described in Developing Better Services as follows:

'The hospital should be linked to the acute hospital network and supported to maintain the following services:

  • A 24-hour A&E Unit, capable of providing resuscitation and emergency coronary care

  • Consultant-led inpatient medical services

  • Daycase, outpatient and diagnostic services'

The detail of what is included within the model is as follows:

  • 24-hour consultant-led A&E Department

  • General Medicine (40 beds)

  • Coronary Care (9 beds)

  • Care of the Elderly (20 beds)

  • Acute Psychiatry (25 beds)

  • Psychiatric Services for the Elderly (20 beds)

  • Day Procedures Unit

  • Paediatric Day Unit

  • Obstetric Day Unit

  • Comprehensive diagnostic services (including CT)

  • A wide range of outpatient services, including an extensive rehabilitation suite

  • Total number of beds will be 124.

  • Additional 10-bed Short Stay Unit in the A&E Department, under the joint management of the consultant physicians and the consultant in A&E.
