Renal UnitThe new Renal Unit opened its doors to patients on Monday 13th November 2006. The two-storey state of the art building has been built to the highest standards. It is situated to the west of the site and currently provides renal dialysis treatment from 22 haemodialysis stations. The ground floor accommodation comprises a 40-stationed renal dialysis treatment area, administration suite, outpatient consulting rooms and a peritoneal dialysis training room. The lower ground floor accommodates staff changing, a rest room, water treatment plant and storage facilities.
The design team, who sought input from the patients’ representatives, paid great attention to detail when designing the dialysis treatment area to ensure patients receive their dialysis treatment in spacious, bright and comfortable surroundings.
Previous Health Minister, Paul Goggins, officially opened the new Renal Unit on 13th March 2007. The Minister said “This investment represents a landmark development in the treatment of renal disease and provides patients with access to modern, top quality services in a convenient, state of the art facility.” Among the dignitaries and staff attending was BBC Sports Commentator, Stephen Watson.
When asked to consider the theme for enhancing their new environment, patients were clear in their choice of Water alongside the overarching theme of Movement. Patients wanted to have something inspiring, uplifting and relaxing to look at during their treatment sessions. A particular request was for a special water feature to identify the unit and this became the key public art commission.
