The Art & Design team and the Trust Resident Artist, Ned Jackson Smyth, are also responsible together with the *ArtsCare Committee, for the integration of art in all it’s forms into the Healthcare setting, within the Ulster Hospital and in Community facilities throughout the Trust area, enhancing the healing environment. This not only involves the installation of visual Art, e.g. sculpture, paintings, murals, floor design, glass art etc., but also encompasses all Art forms including diverse projects across the Trust area and involvement in the integration of Art in Capital Projects. Some recent examples include:
- Painting of Mural in Children’s waiting area, A&E
- Flea Circus and Bedside Theatre to Children’s Wards, Care of the Elderly Unit, Renal Unit, Learning Disability Centres and Elderly Person’s Homes throughout the Community
- Artwork to the new MRI Unit
- Clown Doctors to the Children’s Wards (ongoing one day per week) as below

- Creative Writing workshops in the Renal Unit, Physical Disability Centres, Mental Health Unit and Children’s Residential Homes.
- Performances by various artists, bimonthly in the Children’s wards
- Production of a short film by the Artist in Residence, involving a client from the Mental Health Day Hospital
- Musical Entertainment by professional artists from Music in Hospitals, Trust wide
- Project involving schoolchildren, clients and patients resulting in 100 Artworks, on Exhibition for one month in the Waterfront Hall, now installed in ground floor corridors throughout the Ulster Hospital (Funded by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland) as below:

- Rolling Art Exhibitions by various artists in the Exhibition Corridor (Outside the MRI Unit)
- Dancing classes for Mental Health clients
- Lunchtime social dance classes for staff in the Ulster Hospital
- Lifelines – a publication of writings by patients, clients and staff to be circulated in waiting areas
*The ArtsCare Committee is comprised of members of staff representing a wide variety of disciplines throughout the Trust, a representative from ArtsCare NI and Arts Officers from North Down, Ards and Castlereagh Borough Councils. Funding for ArtsCare activities in this Trust is derived from various sources including ArtsCare NI, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, various charitable and government funding bodies, and fundraising events organised by the ArtsCare Committee. |
