Continence Service



CONTINENCE SERVICE

The Continence Service hours of work: Mon-Fri 9.00am – 5pm

Main Office: Bangor Community Hospital

  • Bangor Health Centre

The Continence Service is a specialist nurse led service for the treatment of patients with bladder and bowel dysfunction, and offers support and education to families / carers of those who suffer from bladder and/or bowel dysfunction.

The Continence Service also provides a Urodynamic service for patients within the Trust catchment area, and also to South and East Belfast.

We also provide education on Continence related issues to Medical Staff, Nursing Staff, Support Staff, and to the Voluntary and Private Sector.

There are three criteria for patients to access this clinic:

  • They are required to be mobile enough to be able to access the clinics (although domiciliary visits can be arranged).
  • They have no profound cognitive impairment, and be motivated to be pro-active with their treatment programme.
  • Referrals are open to patients who reside within the North Down and Ards area.

We accept referrals from eight years of age, and there is no upper age limit providing the above criteria applies.

Treatments offered include biofeedback, electro stimulation, bladder re-training, pelvic floor re-education, treatments for enuresis and encopresis, post operative incontinence, and teaching ISC.

Although Consultants and GP’s make the majority of referrals received to this service, referrals are also accepted from Nursing Staff, AHP’s, and self-referrals are also welcomed.

The Continence Service have a library of patient information leaflets on a variety of topics including, fluid advice, pelvic floor exercises (male and female), bladder re-training, cystitis, faecal incontinence, prostate surgery, and constipation.

The Continence Service has also a long established, and very active user group known as the “Flowline Group” who meet monthly, and help to ensure the service provided is needs led.

The team consist of:

  • A Clinical Nurse Specialist in Bladder and Bowel Dysfunction
  • 2 Continence Resource Nurses
  • A Department Secretary
